Employment Market

Richmond Events and Jonathan Wren (part of the Adecco group) have undertaken a joint research project looking at the employment and recruitment market for finance professionals.
As with most projects of this kind it can be helpful to characterise respondents in groups clustered around their responses to certain questions.
By doing so we were able to describe five groups with very different attitudes. In brief:
  • People people – They’re not interested in a job that isn’t enjoyable. They want a good physical working environment, colleagues with whom they can build comfortable relationships and a manager who is fair and reasonable. .
  • Anything will do – They’re isn’t really much this group won’t do to get a good job. But don’t be fooled - they’ve got a clear long term strategy!
  • Money talks – They don’t care about responsibility, resources, working environment or colleagues. Just the money.
  • I know what I want – They are used to the rung of the salary ladder they arrived at some time ago and are looking to make themselves better off by doing as little as is reasonable to earn it. That doesn’t mean that they shirk, simply that they are not inclined to stretch beyond what their basic salary requires them to do.
  • Inflexible friends – They work hard, know what they’re good at and know what that’s worth. They put themselves first.
By understanding their attitudes and behaviour you will be able to ensure you get the best fit in a finance team. You might also want to use the data to profile your existing employees.
For recruitment agencies the research affords an opportunity to understand better what will draw people seeking a job to you and to match more closely their needs with those of your clients.
Other areas included in the report:-
  • Attitudes to cost of travel, both time and money
  • Flexibility in working hours
  • Salary expectations
  • Reasons for leaving / joining employment
  • What matters in a new job
  • Channels they will use to find their new role
  • Reasons for working with recruitment agencies
This report is essential reading if you:
  • Are involved in recruitment
  • Work in Finance
  • Work in HR
  • Are a recruitment agency
The research was conducted with over 2,000 of Jonathan Wren’s customers in the spring of 2008.
